After completing a B.Sc. at Stellenbosch University, I started my working life as a biochemist at Grootte Schuur Hospital. I later moved to Pretoria to do a M.Sc. in Phyisiology, after which I taught Biochemistry and Physiology at Onderstepoort Veterinary School. Being a bit of a professional student, I moved back to Cape Town to do Honours in Medical Biochemistry. I then realised I missed contact with people and went on to study Medicine at the University of the Free State, which I completed in 1986. My postgraduate experience was gained at Paediatric Intensive Care at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town. We moved from Cape Town to Auckland in 1995 and I have been in General Practice in the Howick area since then where I have really enjoyed getting to know and caring for the local population. In September of 2003 I also obtained my Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of GP's. I am married to Deon, who works at the AUT Business School. We have 2 adult daughters, and a grandson. My parents, who are in their 80's, also live with us, though independently.
Outside work I am a keen walker having just completed my 22nd marathon. I also love reading, movies and the theatre, and if there's time left, a keen cook.
I enjoy looking after families and getting to know them, as medicine is more than just disease. I am interested in preventive medicine and quality of life. My other interests are endocrinology, paediatrics, elder care and women's health.
