what is a PHO?
What is a PHO?
A Primary Health Organisation (PHO) is a group of medical professionals - doctors and nurses - who are contracted to
the Ministry of Health to provide various different health services. It is intended to help medical clinics operate
in a more proactive way, with the emphasis on keeping people healthy and not just treating those who are sick.
Since July 2003, the Primary Health Organisation that provides primary health care, including general practice
services, in the Howick, Pakuranga, Beachlands, Maraetai and Clevedon regions, has been the East Health Trust,
based at 4 Johns Lane, Pakuranga (phone 09 576 3820). The Medical Centre you attend can only claim costs from
the Trust if you are properly registered (at the Centre) and enrolled (with East Health, a procedure which
the Centre will complete once you have submitted your details). East Health now has an enrolled population of
75,000. The Trust is responsible through its members, for many aspects of health promotion:
Walking School Buses, School Food Programme,
Adolescent Sexual Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing,
Elder Care, Palliative Care, Diabetes Checks.
as well as our services caring for sick and injured people.
