Dr Avani Karl MBBS, FRNZCGP
Functional and Regenerative Clinic (at Number 128)
Wednesday afternoons: initial appointments of one hour duration, followup 30 minutes. Specialist fees apply.
I studied medicine at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and graduated MBBS in 1978. I specialised in General Practice and worked till 1987 before emigrating to New Zealand with my husband Kamal, also a medical practitioner. We then established the Hawkes Bay Wellness Centre and delivered true old-fashioned Family Medicine where often the care reached across three family generations. Time spent caring for families gave me many insights into patient experiences and in particular the needs of those with chronic disease. Time spent caring for families gave me many insights into patient experiences and in particular the needs of those with chronic disease. We recently relocated to Auckland where I have undertaken specialist training in the discipline of "functional" medicine. This involves focussing my attention on long-term medical issues which require in-depth understanding, and methods of treatment which take account of the whole person.
I am currently a member of the International Hormone Society and on the Executive of the Auckland Chapter of the Royal NZ College of General Practice. I am normally based at Functional Medicine Doctors in Grafton but from July 2020 I am offering a specialised Functional and Regenerative Clinic one afternoon a week, from the premises of Millhouse Integrative Medical Centre, for patients requiring care in the Eastern suburbs.
We have one married daughter, living in Tauranga and two lovely grandkids whom we love to connect up with at the slightest opportunity.
Hiking, reading and cooking up varied delicious healthy meals are my current interests and I look forward to other International travel adventures.in future.
What is Functional Medicine? Functional medicine is a biological systems-based approach to identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient's genetic, biochemical and lifestyle factors and use of that data to implement personalised treatment plans, and lifestyle interventions as well as natural supplements to improve wellness. Because each symptom may be only one of many contributing to an individual's illness, taking an initial history and assessment is time-consuming. The initial (1 hour) appointment fee is $350; follow ups of 30 mins range from $195 to $250. Child fees may be discounted.
Women's health issues including menstrual problems and PMT, menopause, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, endometriosis, breast health and weight management are all treated successfully using diet, lifestyle, supplements and natural bioidentical hormones as needed.
Child health issues such as nutritional disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, asthma and eczema also benefit with this approach.
Patients with other general conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer will also benefit from a holistic preventative and supportive treatment.
Functional medicine can also provide a fresh perspective on stress, anxiety, and depression, which are coexisting conditions or can be the main issues in many cases.
